Birthday Ideas: How to Buy Clothes For Her
November 2nd, 2012So it’s your significant other’s birthday and you want to get her something nice. Something you haven’t got her before. Something like…clothes? Buying clothes for your partner can be a daunting experience, especially if you don’t know the first thing about women’s fashion which, let’s face it, most of us don’t. While most men can get by with just a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, women’s clothes require a bit more thought. Don’t worry though, we’ve got you covered. Follow these simple tips and hopefully, hopefully, you can avoid embarrassment and get your lady a present she’ll love – and love to wear.
Check Her Size
It might seem obvious but before you buy her anything, make sure what you know her size. Not only will she not be able to wear your gift if it doesn’t fit her, giving her something in the wrong size can send out the wrong message. Buy something too large and she might think you think she’s larger than she is and get self-conscious. Buy something too small and she might think you want her to ‘slim down’. The last thing you want your gift to do is cause offense so make sure you know what size to buy. Check her wardrobe, ask a friend or even ask her if you’re still not sure. It might take away the element of surprise but at least you’ll know your gift fits.
Look At What She Wears Already
If you’re not sure what to get, take inspiration from what your lady wears already. What colours does she usually wear? Does she prefer dresses or skirts? Are there any brands she particularly likes? Try looking at a range of clothes, like Zalando’s ted baker dress range, and seeing what fits in with her style. Taking cues from her existing wardrobe might seem like playing it safe but at least it will ensure she’ll like what you get her – just make sure you don’t buy her something that’s too similar or ,even worse, something that she already owns.
Buy For Her, Not For You
Remember that your gift is for her, not you, so put her first while you shop. Don’t buy something because you like the look of it or because you think it will look good on her. If you think that, great, but only buy it if she’ll feel the same.
Ask Her Friends
A good way to get pointers on what to buy without making your plans known to your partner is to ask her friends. They’ll have a far better idea than you of what she likes and what you should avoid getting at all costs. They may even know if there’s a particular item of clothing she has her eye on.
Accessories
If you want to buy something she’ll wear but are still stumped about what to get, accessories are a good compromise. Bags, belts and scarfs are all fashion musts that will go down a treat with your lady and mean you don’t have to worry about things like size so much. Not just any old belt will do though; as with buying clothes draw inspiration from what she wears already and ask her friends if you’re stuck.
Always Keep the Receipt
Sometimes even the best intended gift backfires so be prepared. Maybe you just got the wrong size, or maybe she’d prefer blue to black but even if she doesn’t like your gift, don’t be too disheartened -she’ll probably appreciate the gesture and with a receipt she can exchange her unwanted present for something she’ll actually wear.
